Hylkema Consultants specialises in finding and creating new or better use for historical and contemporary monuments and characteristic buildings. This always concerns selected, extraordinary property with rare qualities or promising potential: be it single or assembled objects, or extraordinary urban or rural areas. We facilitate these changes and restorations on all different levels of the process: concerning both content and management, dealing with organisational and financial issues. Operating on all of these levels regularly results in Hylkema Consultants assuming the role of commissioner, and managing the whole project. The scope of Hylkema Consultants isn't limited to monumental property or estates, it also reaches: contemporary architecture, landscape design and development, art policy and education. To be able to perform well every time, we rely on our network of eminent representatives of closely connected disciplines.

Operating procedure

Commissioner - Manager

Typical for the way Hylkema Consultants operates is assuming the role of commissioner and managing the whole process. This assures being able to keep an eye on "the big picture", to notice the possible need for specialist knowledge, to lobby for funds or subventions. Knowing our way around the various fundraising possibilities and around the complicated bureaucracy of city regulations, and to be able to make use of both, is our added value in dealing with changing and/or restoring buildings. Our strength is managing the process from the beginning until the end, from conception till realisation; we'll restore your dreams! Because we focus on historical and cultural values we're able to not only repair or add on to buildings but recreate lost features and strengthen historic structures.

Company's history

Hylkema Consultants BV (before 1996 known as Hylkema Management & Consultancy BV) was founded in 1990. After Ubbo Hylkema (founder, CEO) presided the Netherlands Department for the Conservation of the Built Heritage (1991 - 1994) the business focussed more on architecture, urban planning and restoration. Typically, back then the projects already combined all different aspects of restoring a building: architecturally, financially and legislatively. From 1998 onwards interior design and furnishing became even another scope of the company, which also started to be more and more professionally operating. In 2002 Cor Wijn joined Hylkema Consultants, adding valuable knowledge of municipal regulations and art policy. The company kept on growing, both in quantity of projects at hand, as in number of employees. Since 2005 Reinoud Pince van der Aa, Jan van Zelst and Machiel van der Plas. have joined the company, after previously having worked on projects on a freelance basis.
